The Hunger Games: Peeta and the Bread of Life

by Stacey Tuttle

Peeta Mellark’s family had enough to eat.  They were bakers and always had fresh bread to eat.  They were the lucky ones though.  People around them were starving to death.  Times were tough in District 12 where they lived.  So tough that Katniss Everdeen had been looking in trashcans, desperate to find anything to eat—with no luck.

Katniss had no hope left.  She collapsed, resigned to give up.  Her mother and little sister were at home, starving to death as well, waiting on Katniss to come home with something to eat, something to keep them alive.  But Katniss had nothing—she had nothing to trade and no money to buy, and even the trash cans were empty…offering her nothing.  She was so poor and dirty she wasn’t even able to walk into the bakery for a look.

Peeta saw her and had compassion on her.  His mother had just scolded her for looking in the trashcans, so he knew how she would feel about giving Katniss something from the bakery.  She wouldn’t even let Katniss look for something in the trash, she surely wouldn’t let her have …

Stewardship Part 2: Stewarding His Voice

By Stacey Tuttle

I have been thinking about stewardship a lot lately.  I wrote here about the first significant shift in my thinking; maybe we could even say a revelation:  the idea that rather than just asking God for the resources I need, I need to ask Him to make me a worthy recipient of those resources—a steward he trusts.  This morning, however, as I was writing in my journal about some things that happened in me at church this weekend, God added another little component to this idea of stewardship.

I think if you were to summarize this particular little tweak in my thinking, it would come down to an addition to what I previously considered a resource that God would ask us to steward.  Let me explain.

I have for some time been asking God to speak to me—to speak more frequently, more clearly, more loudly, more obviously…whatever.  I just want to KNOW that God is speaking to me, and KNOW what He is saying.  This weekend God reminded me of several times I have just known something.  There wasn’t an audible voice, or a burning bush, …

Stewardship Part 1: Being, Not Just Receiving

By Stacey Tuttle

I’ve been doing a lot of thinking about stewardship lately.  I guess that may be natural, given the circumstances.  What circumstances?  Well, for starters, I “raise support” for my job.  This means that the organization I work for doesn’t pay me a salary.  Instead, I get other people who want to support what we do to send money to our organization to fund my work.  As I ask for other people to consider sending money to support me (I mean, technically, I should say they are supporting the work we pray God is doing through us—but in a practical sense, and in a simple sense, they are supporting me) I naturally tend to think a bit about stewardship.

Wikipedia says stewardship is “an ethic that embodies responsible planning and management of resources.”  Webster adds that it’s the “careful and responsible management of something entrusted to one’s care.”  For the purposes of this article, I would put those two together and add mention of the Source of your resources, the One to whom you are responsible to steward well.  Putting it all together, stewardship …

Why I Hate Religion, But Love Jesus – A Review & Response

by Craig A. Smith (Ph.D.)

If you haven’t seen it yet, you should probably watch Jeff Bethke’s video Why I Hate Religion, But Love Jesus. As I write this, his video has been watched more than 19 million times on YouTube. It’s also inspired a whole host of response videos, some of which are worth watching.

In short, Bethke’s premise is simple: the Christian “religion” obscures the truth about Jesus. He identifies religion as something that has started many wars and something that has built huge churches while failing to feed the poor. I think most people can agree that wars and self-serving hypocrisy are terrible legacies. But is religion the true culprit here? I’m not at all sure that it is, yet Bethke has re-defined religion in such a way that, if you accept his definition, it almost has to be. He also seems to subtly imply that “religion” is synonymous with the organized church, leaving one to wonder if the only way to follow Jesus authentically is to do so apart from the church.

Let me be clear: there is much in …
